The 17th edition of Sofia Pride is scheduled for today in Bulgaria’s capital city. The organizers describe it as “the biggest human rights event in Bulgaria”. This year’s motto is “Bulgaria is our home too”.
Eight successful professionals from the community are featured on billboards in Sofia as part of the campaign. Sofia Pride is scheduled to start at 2 PM from Battenberg square. A concert is scheduled for 4 PM with the participation of famous Bulgarian performers, among them Irina Florin, and the peaceful procession is set for 7.30 PM.
“The institutions have always reacted adequately to Sofia Pride and we have always cooperated very well with the Sofia police,” LGBTI rights activist Radoslav Stotanov from the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee said in an interview for the BNR.
Before the Sofia Pride, a march for the family will be held in the capital city. Its organizers say its aim is to protect “traditional Bulgarian families and Christian values”. As always, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church published an official position against the holding of the Pride.
The 2024 Sofia Pride is supported by the Bulgarian Fund for Women, the US Embassy in Bulgaria, the Embassy of Australia, the Embassy of Great Britain, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and others.
