ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP has announced that another 160 people from the coal-fired power plant will be laid off in the coming months after the procedure for notifying the institutions and the workers has been completed, the company’s executive director Vassil Shtonov has announced, BNR-Stara Zagora reports.

“This step has to be taken for several reasons – the power station has not been included in the production of electricity for the so-called “regulated market”, on the free market electric energy production from lignite is not cost effective. On the other hand, at this time there is electricity oversupply and very little demand,” Vassil Shtonov said. Around 35 staff will stay on at the power plant, and they will be working with the new projects – solar energy production and batteries for its storage.
