The Social Assistance Agency in Bulgaria has set up an organisation to provide support to families affected by the country's fires as soon as possible, the department's press office said. Social workers are accepting on the spot applications for one-off aid to cover vital needs, the maximum amount of which is BGN 1,578 (about EUR 800).

Labour and Social Policy Minister Ivaylo Ivanov said at a joint briefing with Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev and Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov in the Plovdiv village of Otets Paisievo that all those who meet the regulatory criteria will be paid the aid as quickly as possible

The one-off aid in the event of a natural disaster supports families whose legally constructed and basic housing has been damaged.

Minister Ivanov added that in addition to the aid from the social agency, families can apply to the relevant municipality for assistance of up to BGN 2 500 (EUR 1 250) from the Social Protection Fund of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy. These funds are allocated to purchase furniture and equipment for the damaged homes.

In addition, people will be able to apply for assistance to the fund of the Interdepartmental Commission for Reconstruction and Assistance under the Council of Ministers, Minister Ivaylo Ivanov explained.

Together with the municipalities, opportunities will be sought to accommodate the people who have lost their homes in the fires.
