On the sixth day after the beginning of the summer fasting dedicated to the Theotokos, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church celebrates the Transfiguration of the Lord, one of the twelve feasts of the Lord. And as the Bulgarian tradition dictates, the church holiday is supplemented with various folk beliefs and customs, characteristic for particular regions of Bulgaria, which you can explore in the numerous publications on Radio Bulgaria.
There is a belief that on this day God's door appears in heaven and opens. Then the Lord Himself appears to grant the wishes of the righteous, who alone could see God's door and ask the Lord for what they needed.

Although in the height of summer, in popular belief the Transfiguration of Our Lord marks the beginning of the transition to autumn. The sun turns its back on summer and faces winter. The day is waning, the snakes and lizards hide in their burrows, the swallows begin to gather for their journey south.

Nature is transformed on August 6, and this is an opportunity for people to change too. Or at least to try....
