A new flare-up of the big wildfire on the Greek side of Slavyanka mountain has crossed the border into Bulgaria, extending the perimeter of the fire over 120 hectares of Bulgarian territory. Heavy bulldozers are making wide clearings so as to contain the fire, said Plamen Poyukov, director of Katuntsi state forestry service.
“To the East and to the North the fire is low but it has spread to a very large area in Alibotoush bio reserve. Fire fighters, forest rangers and the army will get all-terrain fire engines up there to make water strips so as to contain the fire,” Plamen Poyukov said, and added there was no danger to the populated areas and there was no need of volunteers to fight the flames. Two Spanish airplanes, which arrived on Monday, will join the efforts to extinguish the fire from the air, alongside Bulgarian military helicopters. The teams of two Swedish aircraft which took part in the efforts to put out the flames left on Monday.
