Bulgarian head of state Rumen Radev has met in the presidency with David Wright - commissioner of the US Nuclear Regulation Commission, who is on a visit to Bulgaria, the press office of the presidency announced. During the conversation, aspects of the cooperation between Bulgaria and the USA in the field of nuclear energy were discussed, including the construction of the 7th and 8th units of the Kozloduy NPP and the implementation of the AP-1000 technology. Keeping in mind the management and maintenance of the facilities, the opportunities for training Bulgarian specialists were also considered. Issues related to the licensing of the reactors, as well as the time and financial framework of the project were also a topic of the conversation.
At the meeting, the president pointed out that Bulgaria has over 50 years of proven experience in operating nuclear facilities in compliance with the highest safety standards. The development of nuclear energy provides autonomy and security, as against the backdrop of growing global consumption and demand for energy, it emerges as an accessible and reliable source contributing to the achievement of carbon neutrality, Radev also pointed out.
David Wright expressed the readiness of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission to share its experience and expertise to support Bulgaria's role in ensuring energy security and stability not only in the country, but also in the region.
