Sofia is not among the most visited European capitals. And it has a lot to offer - the city is modern, yet preserving the charm of the past. The Bulgarian capital is a good alternative to Paris and London, reports the Bulgarian edition of Deutsche Welle citing the German source Die Welt

The German edition emphasizes that from the end of March 2024, Bulgaria is part of the Schengen area, and air travel has become easier than ever. It is also noted that "Sofia is a real alternative to leading European tourist destinations such as London, Paris or Rome," writes Die Welt, noting that Sofians "often speak good English and are willing to help tourists."

According to Die Welt, the trams, some of which date back to the 1960s and 1980s - West German and Czechoslovakian production, still remind of the former socialist past.

The German edition also pays attention to the history of Sofia - from Roman times to our recent Socialist past. It is also noted that the modern face of the Bulgarian capital can be found around the university, where "everything is green and full of culinary delights", and the many bookstores in the center are "a good sign of the vitality of a city".
