Beekeepers have decreased by about 50% in northeastern Bulgaria

In Bulgaria's Dobrich region, beekeepers registered lower yields from their hives for yet another year, and the number of people employed in the industry decreased by about 50%.

Beekeepers are selling off colonies, hives and equipment en masse, mostly because of the high costs and low purchase price of wholesale honey.

The chairman of the "Pchela Dobrich 1946" Association, Galin Georgiev, told the BNR correspondent in Dobrich that the purchase price was below the cost price - about BGN 4, while some time ago the price was BGN 5.50 - 6. This is also the reason why whole apiaries are sold, together with the honey in them.

The beekeepers point out that the purchase price should not be lower than BGN 6.50, and the import should be controlled in order to develop the industry.
