At an extraordinary meeting, the municipal councilors from the Municipality of Dobrich, Dobrich District, North-Eastern Bulgaria, decided that the local residents should decide in a referendum whether to give the green light for wind energy parks in the area.

68 villages of the municipality will be able to vote in the referendum together with the parliamentary elections on October 27. The proposal for this was made by the mayor of the municipality, Sonia Georgieva.

This is the first ever local referendum for the municipality. About 30 settlements in the region are the object of investment intentions for the construction of wind energy parks.

"We are against the construction of wind farms on agricultural land. They want to destroy Bulgaria's beautiful arable land," local residents told BNR Varna.
