1,000 runners participate in the classic 42.195 km competition at 2024 Sofia Marathon

Over 6,500 runners from various countries are participating in the 2024 Sofia Marathon, which is taking place over the weekend. Around a thousand athletes competing in the classic marathon distance of 42.195 km set off from Alexander Battenberg Square this morning.

33-year-old Moroccan Bilal Marhoum is considered to have the best chances in the men's event, while Ruth Matebo (Kenya), who won titles in Sofia, Stara Zagora and Varna, is considered to have the best chances in the women's event.

Today, there will be races across three distances. The start/finish line is at Knyaz Alexander I Square in front of the National Gallery. The total prize fund is over BGN 65,000 (nearly EUR 33,000). The winners of the women's and men's 42.195 km run will receive EUR 3,000 each.
