About 770,000 people, or 16.5% of the population of Bulgaria, suffer from diabetes. This is shown by data from the latest screening, carried out in 2024 and presented by the president of the Bulgarian Society of Endocrinology Prof. Dr. Anna-Maria Borisova at a press conference on the occasion of the upcoming World Diabetes Day.
The comparative analysis shows an increase in the number of diabetes patients in this country as in 2006 the percentage was 7.9. According to Borisova, one out of three people over the age of 60 in Bulgaria has diabetes. Men predominate among the patients, as well as people living in cities. Among the important prevention methods are healthy diet and sports, the doctor pointed out.
