Bulgarians go to the polls today to elect 240 members of the 51st National Assembly. Nineteen parties and nine coalitions are registered to take part in the elections. A total of 4 858 candidates - 3 480 men and 1 378 women - are vying for a seat in Parliament.

Voters will cast their ballots at more than 12 640 polling stations across the country and abroad.

Abroad, Bulgarians will be able to vote at 719 polling stations in 57 countries, 157 of which will use electronic voting.

Polling stations will open at 7.00 a.m. and close at 8.00 p.m. In the case of voters waiting outside polling stations, the law allows the voting day to be extended until 9.00 p.m. at the latest.

All Bulgarian citizens over the age of 18 who are not prohibited from voting or serving a prison sentence have the right to vote in the parliamentary elections.

This is the seventh parliamentary election since 4 April 2021.

Politicians and public figures are calling on citizens to vote despite voter fatigue, as a higher turnout would reduce the burden of a bought and controlled vote.

The caretaker government has allocated just over BGN100 million (€51 million) for the early parliamentary elections on 27 October.
