Constitutional Court opens case following President Radev’s request for the constitutional changes to be annulled

The Constitutional Court has opened a case following the request by President Rumen Radev for the amendments to the Constitution, endorsed by the 49th National Assembly, to be declared unconstitutional. These amendments concern the lifting of the ban on dual citizenship as a mandatory condition for the election of members of parliament, the introduction of the principle of continuity of the term of office of the members of the MPs and of parliament, and the new rules for the appointment of a caretaker cabinet.

The changes to the Constitution under fire cancel the mechanisms of political accountability in the formation and functioning of the bodies of state governance, the motives of the president read.

The Constitutional Court will rule on the matter for the second time, after failing to garner a majority for a ruling in the summer.
