The European Commission's Directorate-General for Competition has notified Bulgargaz and Bulgartransgaz that the case on the agreements concluded between the Bulgarian companies and the Turkish energy company Botas has been closed and no competition violations have been found.

In October 2023, the EU opened a case to investigate whether EU competition rules were violated by the deal concluded at the end of 2022 for the supply of liquefied natural gas from terminals in Turkey and the reservation of capacity at interconnection points between Bulgaria and Turkey.

The commercial parameters in the contracts were not checked, Brussels said. The temporary parliamentary committee in Bulgaria, which was established at the end of 2023 to verify the facts of the contract, found losses of $500,000 per day for the Bulgarian side from the Botas deal.
