The Presidency of the Renew Europe group in the European Parliament unanimously decided to recommend the termination of membership of the Group of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) party, following the actions of its leader, Delyan Peevski. ''The values of the DPS-Peevski faction are fundamentally incompatible with those of Renew Europe. Therefore, I will recommend the immediate exclusion of the DPS-Peevski party from our group”, Renew Europe President Valerie Hayer stated. The Renew Europe Bureau will meet today at 6:00 pm to further discuss the decision. The group will hold a vote on January 14 to finalise the termination of membership of the Group of the DPS party.
We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB) welcomed the decision and emphasized that it "confirms the position of the Bulgarian democratic forces on the need for a cordon sanitaire around oligarchic structures that hinder the development of our country."
Prior to this, the Liberal Southeast European Network (LIBSEEN) announced that it is starting an immediate procedure for the exclusion of Delyan Peevski’s formation from ALDE and Renew Europe. LIBSEEN further emphasized that DPS-New Beginning is no longer part of them. Their decision is in line with Article VII of the LIBSEEN Charter, which allows for the suspension or expulsion of member organizations that do not act in accordance with the principles of the network, including the fight against corruption and respect for the rule of law. Meanwhile, LIBSEEN will continue to work with those led by the Vice President of the Liberal International, Dr. Dzhevdet Chakarov.
Yesterday, the 12th National Conference of DPS took place in Sofia, convened extraordinarily by its co-chairman Delyan Peevski. The delegates adopted a new party statute and elected Delyan Peevski as the sole leader of DPS.
According to the new statute, the party's goals are updated and modernized, and the figure of the honorary chairman is abolished. A new youth organization has also been established.
