After thousands of people and hundreds of towns and villages were left without electricity for a week, in a statement to the media, the leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS)-New Beginning Delyan Prevski called for the resignation of the members of the Energy and Water Regulatory Commission. “They must stop sheltering behind the weather conditions, hiding behind expired terms of office or insufficient powers, they must take responsibility for their inability to cope with the energy distribution companies. Otherwise, the suspicions will remain of oligarchic and business dependencies, and we are calling for it to be investigated. (…) In view of the resources which the Bulgarian taxpayers have been funneling into the sector, the demand for a 9% rise in the prices of electricity as of 1 January, 2025 is an expression of colossal cynicism and is absolutely unacceptable,” Delyan Peevski writes, and calls on parliament to elect new members of the Energy and Water Regulatory Commission as a matter of urgency.
