The 147th anniversary of the liberation of Sofia from Ottoman rule was celebrated with a historical re-enactment in the capital's North Park.

"The re-enactment recreates the three battles of the villages of Sarantsi, Dolni Bogrov and Vrazhdebna and the entry of Russian troops and General Gurko on a white horse into Sofia," said Lyubomir Laskov, secretary of the National Alliance Edinenie ("Unity"), which is organising the event together with the Nadezhda district of Sofia and the United Balkans Association.

With the help of more than a hundred participants, spectators were able to see how the battles were fought. The re-enactment showed reconnaissance, capture and interrogation, artillery preparation, infantry actions, storming and capture of the enemy position.
The mayor of the capital district "Nadezhda" Eng. Dimitar Dimov said that the purpose of such historical re-enactments was to show children how the past can be a teacher and the future a quest. "I am convinced that by passing on the pride of our glorious past to the younger generation, we will be able to educate them as citizens who will confidently build a better future for Bulgaria," he added.
