Babinden or Midwives' Day: When tradition connects us to the roots of life

Today is Babinden (Midwives' Day) - one of the most beloved and authentic Bulgarian holidays deeply rooted in local folk tradition. Celebrated on 8 January in the new style calendar and January 21 in the old style, it is dedicated to the women who used to help young brides at birth - the so-called "babi" (literal translation "old women", "old grannies").

The custom is accompanied by a series of rituals related to beliefs about fertility, health and longevity. In some regions of Bulgaria, these ancient traditions are still observed today. At the heart of Babinden is the veneration of women and their role in the creation of new life.

And the "babi" (elderly women) as guardians of ancient knowledge, play a central role in these rituals. They used to bathe the newborns, anoint them with honey and butter for health, and they also used to dress the mothers giving birth, sprinkling herbs to welcome the new life gently.

One of the funniest moments of the celebration is the women's opportunity to play pranks on the men. On this day, social roles are reversed and women can indulge in everything from banter to rougher devilry. Men, for their part, try to "save themselves" by giving money to the old ladies.

The climax is the ritual bathing of the "baba" (midwife). She would be carried to a river or fountain where she would be sprinkled with water. This is a symbol of completion of the cycle and gratitude to the grandmother for her role in welcoming new life.

Babinden is more than a custom - it is an expression of respect for the woman who gives life and preserves traditions. The holiday combines ancient Bulgarian beliefs, magical rituals and folk merriment, making it a form of unique cultural heritage. In some parts of Bulgaria, this ancient custom lives on, reminding us of the importance of tradition and our connection to the past.
