The Legal Committee in Parliament has unanimously obliged the Supreme Judicial Council to suspend the election of Prosecutor General scheduled for January 16 with a single candidate - the current acting prosecutor Borislav Sarafov, after the entry into force of the amendments to the Judiciary Act. The amendments are expected to be discussed in the plenary hall of the National Assembly as early as Wednesday, January 15.

According to the amendments to the Judiciary Act, the procedures for the election of the Prosecutor General and the chairs of the Supreme Administrative Court and Supreme Cassation Court, which have not been completed with a presidential decree on appointment by the date of promulgation of the amendments, are terminated. This means that even if the SJC were to elect Sarafov on January 16, if the president delays his final signature and in the meantime the amendments enter into force, the SJC would have to terminate this specific procedure.

But even if his election is suspended, Borislav Sarafov may remain acting Prosecutor General and run in the next procedure, reporter Silvia Velikova informed.
