The National Assembly decided that only members of the Supreme Judicial Council with an unexpired term of office will elect the Prosecutor General and the Chairpersons of the Supreme Court of Cassation and the Supreme Administrative Court. The text, proposed by Petar Petrov and Tsveta Rangelova from Vazrazhdane, was approved at second reading.
208 MPs voted in favor, 29 MPs from DPS-A New Beginning voted against. The Plenum of the Supreme Judicial Council can make a proposal to the President for the appointment and dismissal of the President of the Supreme Court of Cassation, the President of the Supreme Administrative Court and the Prosecutor General, and only members whose term of office has not expired at the date of the proposal or decision can participate in the vote. The new provisions call into question the legitimacy of the upcoming election of the Prosecutor General, scheduled for January 16.
