The government has requested an urgent meeting with European Commission representatives to discuss the cancelled tender for the acquisition of 35 multiple unit trains under the recovery and resilience plan. Minister of Transport Grozdan Karadjov explained, at a sitting of the parliamentary transport committee, that it is still possible to extend the procedure.
At the end of 2024, the Supreme Administrative Court annulled a decision by the Commission on Protection of Competition, and terminated the procedure for designating a contractor for the delivery of the new trains. Under the cancelled tender, the state railways were supposed to receive 35 trains for EUR 330 million and financing under the recovery and resilience plan. Minister Karadjov explained that he requested a top level meeting with the European Commission, adding that he believes there are no less than three different options for saving the tender.
