“A pair of storks, plus a solitary bird probably awaiting its partner, flew to the two nests next to the Holy Prophet Elijah church at dusk yesterday,” said Mayor Tatyana Georgieva. The village had only just put on their martenitsas, she joked, and now they have to take them off – as is the tradition.
Six pairs of storks nested in the village last year. “However, this year the first birds were late in coming compared to last year, probably because it has been a cold February - we were getting worried,” Mayor Georgieva said.
The first stork for 2024 flew into the country on 20 February.
