40 years since the bombing of Bunovo station

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the bombing of Bunovo railway station, in which 7 people were killed and 9 severely injured. On 9 March 1985, a bomb exploded in a carriage designated for mothers and children on the Burgas-Sofia train.

The attack was carried out by an explosive device planted by members of a pro-Turkish terrorist organisation. The clockwork bomb was designed to explode when the train reached the Galabets tunnel after Bunovo station on its way to Sofia. However, the train was several minutes late and the explosion took place in the station. Three people directly involved in the bombing were sentenced to death by firing squad.

The bombing was a reaction to the so-called "revival process". In 1984-1985, the communist regime carried out a forced mass renaming of Bulgarian Turks in an attempt to assimilate them.

The memory of the victims of this terrorist attack is honoured with a ceremony at the monument erected at the site.
