Fifty-seven per cent of Bulgarians are in favour of including religious education in the compulsory school curriculum, according to a survey by Trend. 26% are against the idea. Support is lower than average among the youngest and higher among the over-70s.

Opinions on whether religious education should be tailored to students' beliefs - for example, Orthodox to study Orthodoxy, Catholics to study Catholicism and Muslims to study Islam - are more nuanced, the agency said. Forty-four per cent of respondents said they supported it to some extent, while 38 per cent said they opposed it.

Six out of ten believe that religious education can contribute to the development of moral values in students, while 23% disagree.

This nationally representative survey by Trend, commissioned by 24 Hours, was conducted between 10 and 16 March 2025 via direct semi-standardised face-to-face tablet interviews with 1,020 people aged 18 and over.
