Improving the road network requires around EUR 1 billion annually for a period of 10 years. In an interview with BNR, Yasen Ishev, Chairman of the Scientific and Technical Union for Transport and a road construction specialist, pointed out that about EUR 600 million have been allocated for road maintenance for 2025, while more than EUR 17 billion are needed just for road inspections.

According to him, another reason for the poor road statistics, apart from the fault of drivers, is corruption. Yasen Ishev called on the state to take action, because an inspection of the road structure revealed that about 10% of the construction materials are missing. The expert pointed out that the first step should be to conduct a road safety audit, focusing on sections with a high concentration of accidents. "A black spot road sign is not enough. Road geometry and visibility also need to be improved. There are problematic sections, but there's no comprehensive plan to deal with them'', said Yasen Ishev.
