For the ninth year in a row, the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds is organising the Let’s Count the Sparrows campaign. It takes place this Saturday, May 3, and anyone can take part by recording the number and types of sparrows they observe on the birds.bg website.
To do this, one must choose a specific location (between buildings, a garden, a yard, a park, etc.) and count the sparrows they see for just 10 minutes between 9 am and 12 pm. The aim of the campaign is to assess the status of the three most common sparrow species - house sparrows, tree sparrows and Spanish sparrows.
The count will help to determine not only their numbers in the habitats where these urban birds are found, but also their preferred habitats and which species of sparrow is most common in our country. The campaign is carried out every year in order to identify long-term trends in their populations and the factors that influence them.
