If you're feeling overwhelmed by the bustle of the city and are longing for some fresh air, wide open spaces and peace, then Cherni Vrah is the perfect place for you. Just a stone's throw from the busy capital, it offers us what we often miss: invigorating movement, fresh, clean air, and breathtaking views. It's where concrete gives way to mountains, and fatigue turns into inspiration.

First, you'll reach Aleko Hut, the starting point of the hike. The best way to get there is by car, but you can also use public transport if that works better for you.

There are two trails: one is a gentle path, perfect for beginner hikers or those who prefer a more relaxed route. The other trail is a bit steeper, for those who love an adrenaline rush and don't mind a bit of a physical challenge.

We chose the easier route, and just a few minutes in, we were rewarded with magical views. The path to the summit is a breeze – it's well-marked, and the chance of getting lost is close to zero. You'll often see families with young children on the way!

The distance to the Cherni Vrah shelter is easily manageable, with a range of one hour and 30 minutes to two hours at a leisurely pace. Along the way, don't miss to stop for a photo, a breath of fresh air and a quiet moment in nature.

As you get closer to the top, the ground gets rougher, with some muddy areas and even snow. Make sure you wear your wellies to keep your feet dry.

Once you reach Cherni Vrah – the highest peak of Vitosha Mountain at 2,290 metres – you will get a stunning panoramic view of the entire range. Step into the nearby shelter to warm up with a fragrant drink and reward your efforts with a hot soup or freshly grilled meal before making your way back down.
