Intense rain again causes flood in Northwestern Bulgaria

Photo: BNT

A second flood in two weeks in Northwestern Bulgaria has caused damage in the villages of Lehchevo and Kobilyak. The rainfall, accompanied by large hail, reached 35 liters per square meter in just ten minutes, Lehchevo Mayor Alexander Alexandrov told BNR.

"Homes are constantly being flooded. Basements and ground floors of seven or eight houses have been inundated. More than 20 yards and gardens have also been affected''. said Alexander Alexandrov.

According to the mayor, the flooding is caused by a canal that cannot handle large volumes of water. It needs to be deepened, but the village council lacks the funds for such reconstruction. The village of Lehchevo is relying on assistance from the state.

Alexander Alexandrov expressed hope that the people affected by the recent floods will receive compensation. "The social services assure us they will provide up to 1,900 BGN (EUR 950) per household, depending on the extent of the damage", Alexander Alexandrov added.
