Today at 12:30 p.m. a photo-documentary exhibition on the topic "The Worldwide Echo of the April Uprising". will be opened in the Marble Lobby of the National Assembly. The great-grandson of William Gladstone - Francis Gladstone will participate in the event.
The April Uprising of 1876 was suppressed in a particularly cruel manner by the Ottoman authorities with the participation of the regular army and irregular formations. The atrocities committed against the civilian population caused a strong international response. It was this public resonance that created the necessary political conditions for the future military intervention of the Russian Empire on the Balkan Peninsula. After serious diplomatic, military and logistical preparation, including with the participation of the Bulgarian freedom fighters, Russia declared war on the Ottoman Empire in 1877 - an event that would lead to the Liberation of Bulgaria, the press service of the parliament reports.
