The ruling majority firmly supports the government, which has the prerequisites to complete its full four-year term, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov announced following a meeting of the Joint Governance Council. The meeting addressed the government’s management programme and the legislative priorities of parliament.
“Today, the Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) and I signed a statement in support of introducing the euro in Bulgaria on 1 January 2026,” Zhelyazkov said. “This position reaffirms all actions taken by both the executive branch and the BNB, in line with decisions by the National Assembly in recent years, aimed at meeting convergence criteria and ensuring the effective introduction of the euro with all necessary safeguards for Bulgarian society, effective from 1 January 2026,” he added.
Meanwhile, on 12 May, President Rumen Radev submitted a proposal to Parliament calling for a referendum on whether to adopt the euro. However, Parliamentary Speaker Natalia Kiselova rejected the proposal, citing its inadmissibility and inconsistency with the Constitution.
