Transport Minister Karadjov: Bulgaria still insists on five crossings on the Danube River

Bulgaria is still on the position that there should be five crossings on the Danube River, Deputy Premier and Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadjov said at a meeting of the National Assembly Committee on Transport and Communications, in response to a question from an MP. He was asked whether he expected the policy on transport connectivity with Romania to change after the Presidential elections there. In Grozdan Karadjov's words, the Danube has become a transport obstacle because of the Romanian side's long-standing policy of deterrence, of not allowing new bridge constructions across the Danube.

“We will strive for new crossings over the Danube”, said Grozdan Karadjov. He explained that Bulgaria, Greece and Romania had agreed on a meeting in early June about easing the river traffic, but the Romanian side had subsequently declined the invitation, possibly because of the elections. “Like you, I look with hope toward a change in Romania’s policy after the elections there”, Deputy Premier Karadjov added.
