By decision of the Council of Ministers, the deadline for the implementation of the activities under the National Programme for Polar Studies “From Pole to Pole” 2022-2025" has been extended until the end of 2027, BTA reported. According to the government's press office, one of the main objectives of the program is the funding of modern scientific research in Antarctica and the Arctic, as well as attracting young scientists. Six projects have been approved, and the deadline for their implementation will be 2025-2027.

Among the projects is the recently opened building on Livingston Island, which will house three specialized laboratories intended to expand the scope of scientific research in Antarctica. The total budget of the program is 10,800,000 BGN (EUR 5,522,037), and the extension of its deadline will allow the implementation of the planned activities without additional funding.

The program helps establish connections between organizations and higher education institutions, thereby enhancing Bulgaria’s research capacity. It also provides funding for advanced scientific research in the most remote regions of Antarctica and the Arctic. Part of the funds supported the successful completion of the 33rd Antarctic expedition. The program also includes funding for the logistical support of the Bulgarian Antarctic base.
