Prosecutor's Office moves to curb youth gang violence

Five incidents involving attacks by gangs of the so-called “locals” were recorded in Sofia just last week. Several individuals have been detained and preliminary investigations have been launched. Those over 16 are facing charges, while juveniles are being dealt with by the juvenile unit.

Svetlana Dimitrova, the Sofia district prosecutor, revealed this information after meeting with Chief Prosecutor Borislav Sarafov. It was released in response to the rising number of assaults, as reported by BGNES. The Prosecutor’s Office has vowed to respond with zero tolerance.

The “locals” are aggressive youths aged between 13 and 18, often from well-off families, typically dressed in black sportswear. They roam in groups, randomly attacking and assaulting people, as well as vandalising public and private property.
