The European Rowing Championships for men and women were officially opened at the rowing canal in Plovdiv. 800 rowers from 33 countries are taking part in the championships, taking place 29 May – 1 June.

At the ceremony, the President of the European Rowing Federation Annamarie Phelps welcomed the participants and laid emphasis on the good planning of the championships, the Bulgarian news agency reports. This is the second time Plovdiv is hosting the event since 2011.

In her address Annamarie Phelps praised Plovdiv for providing the perfect setting for fast times and exciting races. She wished the rowers good luck and added that was the beginning of their long way to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. “The racing standard is always phenomenal here, so we keep coming back to Plovdiv,” Annamarie Phelps said.
