Raising fines for traffic offences and an enhanced police presence – these are the measures announced by Interior Minister Daniel Mitov after the ultimatum given by PM Rosen Zhelyazkov who set a one-month deadline for efficient action to be taken against the growing number of road accidents. Minister Mitov stated further that he is proposing that “drivers with a blood alcohol content in excess of 1.2 per mille be deprived of their drivers’ licences for life, i,e. that they are not allowed to drive any more”, BNR’s Horizont channel reports. Unbranded police vehicles will also be monitoring road safety. Different ways of serving fines that will be more effective are being considered.
According to Interior Ministry data, 83 people have been killed and 1,562 injured on the roads in the country in the period from the beginning of the year until the March.
