Protests in defence of the Bulgarian lev and against the adoption of the euro currency are scheduled to take place on May 31 in many cities and towns across the country today.

In Sofia, the protest is planned to start at 12:00 in front of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB).

The civic committee, which is preparing the protest actions, announced that they will be held in 108 places in Bulgaria and in front of a number of Bulgarian embassies in EU member states, informs BNR reporter Andrey Borisov.
The motto of the protests is: "We want our lev, we want our referendum".
"We want to be asked. We believe that the rejection of a national currency is something very important. When a country takes such radical steps, there should be a public consensus, and our assessment is that currently there is none in Bulgaria," explained Strahil Angelov, one of the organizers of the protest. Angelov added that the organizers of the protest in the various locations are himself, Viktor Papazov, Nedyalko Nedyalkov and Petar Volgin.

The protest is not held under the umbrella of one or another political party. However, there are parties that have supported it. The largest of them is "Vazrazhdane", adds reporter Andrey Borisov.

Due to this protest and other events planned in Sofia for May 31, movement in the city center may be difficult, the police warn.
