The future Rila highway from the Gueshevo border crossing between Bulgaria and North Macedonia to Bulgaria's town of Dupnitsa will cost about 1.5 billion euros. This was said at a working meeting of the governor of the Kyustendil region with experts, MPs and mayors of municipalities along the future route.

The project for the Rila highway from the border crossing with North Macedonia at Gueshevo to Dupnitsa dates back to 1978. In the future, it will connect with the Struma highway near Dupnitsa and with the Trakia and Hemus highways near Ihtiman.

The Rila highway will not be started in 2026, although from a strategic and defense point of view, it is important for Bulgaria's international partners, it was said at the meeting in the regional government.
MP and Chairman of the Transport Committee in Parliament Kiril Dobrev noted:

"Corridor No. 8 will be implemented when North Macedonia is part of the EU, just as it is part of NATO. But for this, all international requirements and existing agreements must be respected."
