More and more foreign students have been choosing Bulgarian universities and higher education institutions in recent years, the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) reports. The increased interest is due not only to the tuition fees, but also to the quality of education and the prestige of the diplomas.

In the academic year 2024/2025, a total of 16,995 foreign students are studying throughout the country - 779 people or 4.8% more than in the previous academic year, according to data from the Ministry of Education and Science.

The largest number of foreign university students are from Greece - 3,277, from Great Britain - 2,235, from Ukraine - 2,151, from Germany - 1,532 students, and from Italy - 990.

The Medical University in Sofia has the largest number of foreign students, followed by the medical universities in Plovdiv and Varna, Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", the Medical University in Pleven, the Thracian University in Stara Zagora, and the National University of National and World Economy.

The most preferred professional fields are medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, public health, tourism and veterinary medicine.
