President Radev: Government fails to understand Bulgaria’s national interests regarding North Macedonia

The head of state commented on the report adopted by the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee this week on Skopje’s progress in the European integration process.

He also sent a letter to the leaders of the European institutions and member states regarding the report, describing the circumstances surrounding its preparation as disturbing. According to BNR reporter Mira Stefanova, he cited the Prime Minister of North Macedonia's public statement that their diplomacy had been working with MEPs for months and had influenced some of the report’s conclusions.

Radev recalled that the anti-Bulgarian campaign in North Macedonia is continuing unabated and that the rights of Bulgarians there cannot be the subject of political bargaining. He added that Bulgaria will not accept any change to the 2022 European compromise, which he described as the only chance for North Macedonia’s European integration.
