EP rejected a request by an MEP from the Vazrazhdane party

Before approving Bulgaria's accession to the eurozone by an absolute majority, the European Parliament in Strasbourg rejected a request by a Vazrazhdane MEP for the vote to be postponed.

The request was tabled by Rada Laykova, a member of the Europe of Sovereign Nations Group. Ms Laykova argued that there was a conflict of interest between the rapporteur on Bulgaria's readiness to join the eurozone and the author of the European Parliament's position — Bulgarian MEP Eva Maydell, who belongs to the European People's Party (EPP).

According to Angelina Piskova, BNR's correspondent in Brussels, the EPP stated that Ms Laykova was not interested in the rules or the conflict of interest and that she and her allies wanted Bulgaria to adopt the rouble rather than the euro.
