The demonstration is against the continued appointment of Acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov, and wider issues of political influence and repression

The civil initiative Justice for All is organising a protest in Sofia tonight under the slogan 'Out with Sarafov, Peevski's henchman!'. It will begin in front of the Palace of Justice and continue with a march to the historic building of the National Assembly and the key intersection in the capital at Orlov Most (Eagles' Bridge).

The protest was sparked by the decision of the Prosecutor's College of the Supreme Judicial Council to leave Borislav Sarafov as head of the prosecution service indefinitely, despite the legal restriction that a non-career prosecutor cannot hold the post for more than six months.

Demonstrators have also expressed concern that the arrests of mayors and municipal councillors are part of a repression campaign.

Sarafov was appointed acting chief prosecutor of Bulgaria in June 2023, following the removal of his predecessor, Ivan Geshev, from office.

According to the latest amendments to the Judiciary Act, passed in January this year, if the term of office of the chief prosecutor is terminated or expires early, a temporary acting chief prosecutor shall be appointed for a term not exceeding six months. The Prosecutor's College has confirmed that this change does not affect Borislav Sarafov, as he was appointed acting chief prosecutor prior to the amendment coming into force.
