Our lands are the cradle of ancient civilizations. Thanks to Bulgarian archaeologists, they are becoming known to the general public, said Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov at the presentation in Sofia of the restored statue of a man from the ancient city of Heraclea Sintica situated close to the town of Petrich in Southwestern Bulgaria. The government will continue to support archaeological activities and provide targeted funding, the Prime Minister promised.

This statue is the result of remarkable cooperation and that is why the results are exceptional, said the head of archaeological research in Heraclea Sintica, Prof. Lyudmil Vagalinski. He thanked the team and pointed out that the restorer of the statue is Reneta Karamanova, who, in his words, literally brought the marble figure back on its feet.

The event was called "A Head Taller" because the statue was discovered in 2024 buried in the sewers of the ancient city of Heraclea Sintica and the man's head was laid separately from the body. The marble monument has remained underground for over 1,600 years.
The exquisite statue will remain at the National Archaeological Museum in Sofia until October, after which it will be returned to the city museum in Petrich, BTA reports.
