Today, experts will seek solutions to the sheep and goat pox outbreak in Bulgaria at a round table event at the University of National and World Economy in Sofia. This highly contagious infection in small ruminants is spreading mainly in the Plovdiv region and several border municipalities. Local Bulgarian breeds are at risk of extinction.

According to BNR Plovdiv, over 13,000 animals have been culled because of the disease so far. The experts will also discuss the dangers of keeping sheep and goats in Bulgaria that have not yet shown symptoms of the disease.

Simeon Karakolev, co-chair of the National Sheep and Goat Breeders Association, said that neighbouring Greece has been battling the disease for over a year. Over 200,000 animals have already been euthanised, and the disease is spreading throughout Greece.
