USA and Bulgaria join forces to stop fentanyl trafficking

The US Drug Enforcement Agency, in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior, held a two-day training in Bulgaria to improve Bulgaria's ability to detect and neutralize the trafficking of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids, BGNES reported. Forensic chemist Jonathan Duffy trained chemist experts from the Ministry of the Interior and the Customs Agency on how to use fast, reliable and safe methods for testing drugs.

“The most advanced testing methods allow for more serious prosecutions, a better understanding of where Bulgaria fits in the global drug supply chain, and also the ability to identify the origin of trafficking. This is a vital tool for local law enforcement agencies, helping them stay one step ahead of smugglers,” said Scott Caporossi, the agency's attaché for Bulgaria.

Speaking to the organizers and participants of the training program, Bulgarian Interior Minister Daniel Mitov reaffirmed the Ministry of Interior’s commitment to countering drug trafficking and distribution. “The Ministry of Interior is determined to be a reliable barrier against the penetration of fentanyl throughout Europe,” he added.

Last year, cooperation between the two institutions led to a significant increase in seizures of dangerous substances and successful joint investigations targeting traffickers.
