Sofia vies with Varna for hosting European volleyball championship

Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev expressed the wish for the European volleyball championship in 2026 to take place in Sofia and not in Varna as planned.

We confirm the invitation, along with the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation, to host the European Championship, 2026, Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev wrote on Facebook. Mayor Terziev made the same proposal on 30 September, when the national volleyball team was welcomed in Sofia after winning the silver at the world championship in the Philippines.

He said he hoped the councilors from the Sofia municipal council would back this cause. On 10 October, the Sofia municipal council is expected to vote on the allocation of 500,000 leva to the volleyball federation; the idea has been put forward for Sofia to also host the matches from the Nations League, which is also scheduled to take place in Bulgaria.
