Bulgaria has a higher share of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields than the European Union average, according to a roundtable discussion on “Women in Innovation” held in Sofia.
The forum highlighted that 49% of employed engineers and scientists in Bulgaria are women, while 27% of information technology specialists are female, placing the country third in the EU. European Commissioner for Startups, Research, and Innovation Ekaterina Zaharieva said that 13% of women innovators in Bulgaria exceed the EU average of 9%, and women professors in Bulgaria account for more than 50%.
Participants concluded that more work is needed to promote gender equality and combat prejudice.
