The village of Hotantsa, near the Danube city of Ruse, is hosting the Hotantsa Sarma Festival, a celebration of Bulgaria’s culinary and folk heritage. Organised by the local cultural and community centre (chitalishte) Svetlina-1928, the festival kicks off at 11 a.m. on November 1 in the village square.

Visitors can savour contests for the tastiest, most creative, largest, and smallest cabbage sarma, as well as the most beautifully arranged table. In a nod to tradition, villagers will prepare ten times the amount of sarma that a household would typically make in autumn — over 200 kilograms of locally fermented cabbage has been set aside for the occasion.

The festival also features traditional songs and dances, tastings, and an exhibition of regional products — all free to attend. With a heritage spanning more than a century, the Hotantsa Sarma Festival offers a rare chance to experience a tranquil Bulgarian village, immerse yourself in autumnal charm, and celebrate a uniquely local culinary tradition.
