A European Parliament committee will monitor road safety in Bulgaria

The European Parliament’s Committee on Petitions (PETI) has decided to monitor the state of road safety in Bulgaria. The decision came after hearing a petition submitted by Rosalina Gadyuchkova, a Bulgarian citizen living in the United Kingdom. The petitioner said she is concerned about the condition of Bulgarian roads as both a citizen and a mother, despite having lived abroad for many years. She cited as a reason for bringing the issue to the European Parliament the 2025 car accident that claimed the life of 12-year-old Siyana Popova.

''This is not an isolated case but part of a long-standing crisis'', Rosalina Gadyuchkova stated. According to her, hundreds of people lose their lives on Bulgarian roads every year. The petitioner attributes this to “poor infrastructure, reckless and intoxicated driving, and limited public transport options, which pose particular risks to road users, especially children”.
