The European Commission has presented a proposal for developing high-speed railway lines within the EU until 2040, linking the capitals in the EU, among them a direct link Bucharest-Sofia-Athens.

According to the plan, using the trans-European transport network,TEN-T, the distance from Bucharest to Sofia will take 6 hours instead of the current 10 hours 15 minutes. Covering the distance form Sofia to Athens by train will also be reduced to 6 hours. Now the distance between the capital of Bulgaria and the capital of Greece takes 13 hours 40 minutes. The aim with the development of these new lines is to reach a speed of at least 200 km/h. This will lead to replacing short-distance air travel and will reduce environmental pollution. The Commission notes that the changes will also reduce highway and road congestion and will extend military mobility options.
