Democracy is consistently perceived by a solid majority in Bulgarian society as the best form of governance. Approximately 1.5 million citizens declare their willingness to risk their personal security to protect it, according to a representative study by Alpha Research, commissioned by the Open Society Institute.

58% of respondents believe that democracy is the best form of governance. In 2023, 63% of those surveyed held the same opinion. 28% are of the opposite opinion. Support for democracy is highest in Sofia, 70%. The more educated citizens support democracy to a greater extent.

When asked whether they would agree to temporarily restrict some of the democratic rights and freedoms, 46% answered “no”, 41% would accept restrictions.

One in three adult Bulgarians is willing to risk their personal lives to defend democracy. One in five (about 1 million people) declares readiness to volunteer in the event of war.
